What is Gyotaku?

By definition, Gyotaku is a Japanese print making method originated in the mid 1800’s to authenticate a fisherman’s bounty. Through this dynamic print making process, pigment is applied directly to a fish and then pressed with rice paper to reveal its intricacies and anatomical beauty. The piece is then rendered (or not) by the discretion of the artists.

Often, the eyes are painted in to enhance detail, creating a more cohesive result. This process lends itself to a piece of art as unique as the human fingerprint while capturing the memory, magnificence and excitement of the catch.
